To answer this question, it’s a good idea to first look at what it is that brake pads do. In a disc braking system (which most modern personal vehicles have), the brake pads press against the brake rotors (or discs) to slow your vehicle down or bring it to a stop.
The brake pads are made of two components: a metal backing and a softer lining. This lining is designed to resist friction as it presses against the metal rotors, decreasing the chance of damage to the braking system. However, this softer material also wears down much faster than metal does. If the brake pad lining wears down entirely, the metal backing of the brake pads will be all that’s left. If these press against the rotors, your braking system will suffer friction damage, and you will need to have expensive repairs performed.
While we can sometimes give estimates, there is no hard and fast rule as to when brake pads should be replaced. If you always come to a slow stop and never load your vehicle with too much weight, your brake pads will likely last longer. If you slam on the brakes at the last second or put too much weight in your vehicle, your brake pads will wear down sooner.
Because brake pads don’t have set mileage at which they need to be replaced, it’s important to have your brakes inspected regularly. When you come to Bravo Chevrolet for a brake inspection, our technicians will check the thickness of the brake pads, as well as other parts of the braking system. They will let you know if the brake pads are in good shape or if they need to be replaced soon.
