To answer this question, it’s a good idea to first look at what it is that brake pads do. In a disc braking system (which most modern personal vehicles have), the brake pads press against the brake rotors (or discs) to slow your vehicle down or bring it to a stop.
The brake pads are made of two components: a metal backing and a softer lining. This lining is designed to resist friction as it presses against the metal rotors, decreasing the chance of damage to the braking system. However, this softer material also wears down much faster than metal does. If the brake pad lining wears down entirely, the metal backing of the brake pads will be all that’s left.
